The Indian Pitta
June 12, 2016
Spotted this very colourful bird- the Indian Pitta in Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve in 2016. It is called nauranga in Hindi in apparent reference to its many colours. It has a buff coloured crown stripe, black coronal stripes, a thick black eye stripe and white throat and neck. The upperparts are green, with a blue tail, the underparts buff, with bright red on the lower belly and vent. I spotted one in my garden too last week but couldn’t click it. I still hear its distinctive call each morning.
